As Winter Grows Weary

Nearly a week ago, I was asked by a kind friend when we would be posting on our blog again, and I told her she would see something by the end of the week. I was sitting in the kitchen today writing thank you cards with this blog post in the back of my head, my commitment haunting me as I finished up each letter. Finally, I could not handle the pressure any longer and ran back to retrieve my computer in the office. When I got it out, it would not log me in and I had to go in and fix the registry before it started again.

From there, I did the first thing one does when they are lacking inspiration for a post: grabbed the camera in hopes of doing a picture post. However, we have taken very few pictures since my last post (which was almost an eternity ago, I am well aware) so I realized I was going to need to create inspiration. From my own brain. Which has not happened for a really long time. Like since the last time I wrote words for a majority of a post.

Winter is to blame. As far as I recall, this has been the coldest, snowiest winter since we got married. After the Christmas rush settled down and the new year came upon us, I expected winter to simply thaw out and become spring like it does in my dreams. Unfortunately, my dreams are waiting to be fulfilled another year. I have been frozen stiff to my seat and feel like I am accomplishing very little these days.

Matthew has made a lot of progress on his car since the last time it was featured on our blog. If you recall from my last post, it had been pretty much totaled by a deer. He found a hood, grill, airbags, and dashboard from a salvage yard and installed them all on his own, along with an old pair of headlights from home. Then he came home last week with a new windshield and the car looks as good as new. Today, the only things that might tip you off that something is wrong are if you tried to use the air conditioner (Who am I kidding? It's winter...) or if you have a keen sense of smell that can sense the pungent fluid leaking from the bottom. Insert from Matt: this has nothing to do with hitting the deer and is simply a maintenance issue that I will be getting fixed soon. The Impala is picture-perfect once again.

BEFORE
AFTER (Excuse the cat prints all over the hood)
We traveled to Michigan for my cousin Mitchel's wedding in January. The wedding was beautiful and we enjoyed the weekend, although we barely managed to survive the blizzard on the way home.

The reception
We enjoyed the photo booth!
My brothers...
A random couple who posed for us at the booth.
Massner Family Words to the Wise #1,363: Be very specific about your preferences when asking Jonathan to take a picture of you.
On account of inflated LP prices, we decided we did not want to fill up the tank until the price was reasonable again. Therefore, we have been collecting firewood and using the wood stove in the basement for heat. Our LP tank has only gone down about two percent since we started. Matt cut down a tree this afternoon with Andrew, and this is the fruit of their labor.

Our first Valentine's day together got off to a wonderful start when Matt woke me up with breakfast in bed. We had heart-shaped pizza for supper...with heart-shaped pepperoni! And while we were sitting there trying to think of a romantic way to spend our evening, I found my old crochet hook and made him a nose warmer, so now we can both have one! The one I made looks more like a beak than anything else.

"I -heart- U"

I got flowers one day in January so they deserve a place on this blog.
The siblings-in-law requested that I make a dish that my husband did not like, and I finally managed to do so last week when I made a Moldy Cheese Casserole after slightly altering a recipe I found online (I will not give out the website in hopes of preserving the site's PR). The only alterations I made were using unsweetened almond milk (as opposed to cow milk) and a half a cup of moldy cheese instead of regular. I did not realize it would so drastically change the taste and we did manage to choke it down for two days before he told me it had to get thrown out. So now we are back to cold cereal until I find my ambition again. The use of moldy cheese as a substitute has been discarded.

Last weekend we learned that my Grandma Schmidgall passed away in Morris, so we brought the boys over to Princeville for the weekend for baptisms as planned and Mom and Dad went up to Morris instead on Sunday morning. That night, we stayed with the boys at home and then brought the clan up to Morris for the visitation and funeral on Monday and Tuesday. It was a crazy-busy weekend of being "Mom and Dad" and we were sure glad to hand the boys back over to them! The weekend was a good chance to remind us to be thankful for our parents, especially as we said our farewells to Grandma and remembered her always kind and patient example.

I got a picture of one of the haircuts I've given him! I can't believe I am actually capable of handling a razor...the first time was frightening, but I thankfully had my whole family around to coach me with their input.
One thing to do when bored at home in the winter: Hide behind your window shades so it is impossible to tell you are there, and then have your spouse take a picture of the shades. Brilliant.
And here we sit on a Saturday afternoon in our quiet abode, reflecting on the joyous days of our first winter together as the snow starts up again. Another blizzard is on its way.

Settled Yet?

What a loaded question.

If by "settled" you mean getting everything cleaned up and put away, we were settled within a week of being married.

If it means obtaining all of the necessary products in order to live independently, we got pretty close within a month.

If one is "settled" after completing their wedding thank-you's, it will be at least another month or two.

If we were settled when our to-do list was no longer a mile long and my husband came home with no projects to fill up his evening, we will be slightly settled until the ground thaws in the spring.

If it means knowing how to do one's job in the kitchen and household, I am somewhat settled.

However, if being "settled" is feeling entirely comfortable in my new role as a married woman and wife, I do not even feel close. It is an adjustment-our lives completely changed. We are thankful for the Lord's continued guidance and faithfulness through this transition, and I pray soon I will be able to say I am fully "settled."

Months 1-2 1/2: Getting Settled and Christmas

I managed to chop of the ends of several fingers after we received the Cutco knives for our wedding.
We got a Bosch for a late wedding gift and had to try out the blender with shakes the night it arrived!
My hubby enjoyed using the beautiful apron so much that he even helped me make cookies, too!
And then came the detrimental day when Matt hit a deer on his way home from work. Since then, he has been working to restore it to drivability, replacing the hood, grill, and steering wheel with parts from a salvage yard and the headlights with some old ones. It is back in service now, despite an exploded dash and slightly spider-webbed windshield. So glad I married a handy man! :)

We made the trek up to Morris, MN with my family for the Schmidgall family Thanksgiving/Christmas at the end of November.
Playing games with the cousins!
We went to sing for Grandma one day at the nursing home. Here she is with all of her granddaughters.
Christmas was at Uncle Bruce and Aunt Penny's.
Justin and Travis came over to do some Christmas baking one Saturday while Matt was working on his car. I did not get a picture of them, but managed to capture one of the mess!
We have had several ice skaters over since the pond froze.
My brothers and the Steiners have been here a few times!
This was the first group of hockey players that came out.

...hot chocolate and cookies followed!
Another late-arrival gift was well worth the wait! Andrew made us this beautiful cedar bed for our wedding. It was so exciting to finally see it all put together in our room!

Steve and Julie came for supper one evening while they were home for Christmas!

Lydia, Corbin, and Suzanna
The Massner family Christmas was on Christmas Eve.
The annual sing-a-long after lunch.
The boys got bikes for Christmas!
...and the annual Christmas band.
The Schulz family Christmas was on Christmas Day. Taren and Kyra got four-wheelers!
It was a little difficult to get in on a picture of the girls, but I thought this scene was almost better. :) I didn't manage to end up with very many pictures of this day.
Lydia was our companion for part of the way to the Knobloch Christmas up in Lester at the end of December. The entire Schulz crew made the trip!
I forgot to get out my camera very much that weekend. We went to a science museum in Sioux Falls on Saturday.
That evening, we went to Pizza Ranch in Rock Rapids. Need I even mention Matt's favorite part?
The newest member of our family is Snowbell, who made the journey north from Mom and Dad's to live with us out here in the country. He loves it when the boys come visit him! :)
Christmas was a crazy-busy time for us, and we managed to attend a total of eight family Christmases. The others at which I neglected to bring/use my camera included: Dad Schulz's family Christmas, the BIG Massner Christmas, the Lanz Christmas, the Dad Massner family Christmas that has been postponed, and the first annual Matthew Schulz family Christmas.

Actually, we did get a picture of our first Christmas together.

Matt learned that my nose is always cold, so he had his sister Brenda crochet a nose warmer for me. It works wonderfully, but everyone who sees it tends to inform me it makes me look like a bird. They do not know what they are missing out on...at least my nose is warm!
Since Christmas, the weather got tired of cooperating and we have been trying to keep warm indoors away from the freezing cold! It finally got up to a toasty 38 degrees today and we are so thankful to finally see the grass and feel the warm sunshine outside.

While staying warm in the house since Christmas, I have kept busy with a bit of organizing, starting thank-you's, and seeking inspiration for decorating this bare home. Matt has been finding things to do around here as well, though I am sure he will be happy when spring comes again!

Thus ends the exhaustive conclusions from the first two and a half months of our marriage. We hope you, too, had a wonderful Christmas and we wish you many blessings in 2014!

**Unfortunately, we had technical difficulties when publishing this post and it is not the original that some may have read. I tried to duplicate it from the best of my memory, but I am sure I slipped in a few places! :)

The Honeymoon

For our honeymoon, we flew down to the Smokey Mountains Monday morning and spent the week in a cabin just outside Pigeon Forge.

The first photo-worthy moment was seeing Matt's rental car for the week: a C-Max Hybrid. This vehicle kept us entertained all week when the scenery wasn't enough.

We spent our Tuesday walking through the shops in Gatlinberg. Sitting on top of this five-ton floating granite ball was no small feat.

We ate at the Bullfish Grill for our meal from Grandma. The wait was pretty long so we found a nice couple to take our picture.

Wednesday was hiking day, and also one of the colder days of our trip. We hiked up to the top of Chimney Tops trail.

It got a little steep and rocky toward the end.

Those are the Chimney tops!
That night we went to the Dixie Stampede. On Thursday, we went to Wonderworks and spent most of our day there.

We found this oddly labeled light switch in our cabin to be quite useful.

Frying up our breakfast!
Thursday night we walked down by the river and then rode on the Ferris Wheel. We got a good deal on night/day passes, so we came back Friday morning and rode it again.

We rode the country's tallest Ferris Wheel! (According to the guy running it?)
After that, we went to the Titanic Museum and then packed up to go home Saturday.

The cabin and C-Max before our departure
We took the scenic route through the mountains to get back to the airport and then flew back to Moline and stayed in a hotel that night again.
Flying home Saturday night
Our tastefully decorated kitchen upon our return home Sunday afternoon.
Someone brought our mattress over and made the bed for us....a very kind thing to do. Except they never learned how to make a bed because the sheets were folded wrong underneath and we couldn't fit our legs in all the way.
...and after two more days off work to get things settled, cleaned, and put away, we ended the wedding planning stage of life and began to settle into our new routines. :)
